Core Maths runs a full academic year with no coursework and one shot at the exam, so consistent weekly homework matters — but so does not drowning in marking. Short and frequent beats long and rare

The homework studies with the strongest impact set work twice a week rather than once. A focused 10–15 minute task little and often outperforms an hour-long task set weekly.

Reinforce, don't introduce

Homework should practise what's already been taught, not deliver new content cold. Tasks that mirror the examples used in the lesson give pupils a solid foundation to build on.

Keep the time load bounded

Roughly two hours a week of homework across a subject is well supported by evidence; four hours isn't — more time does not reliably mean more progress.

The recommended system

A three-week rotation, repeated all year

Rather than picking one tool, rotate three short, purposeful homework types. Each is auto-marked or self-marked, so your job most weeks is reviewing a results summary rather than marking scripts.

Week 1 · Retrieval

Google Form quiz

8–10 auto-marked questions mixing this week's topic with two or three from earlier chapters. Build one template once, duplicate it weekly, and post it as a Classroom assignment.

Week 2 · Practice

Integral section test

An auto-marked section test on the Core Maths platform, tied directly to the topic just taught. Use the grader report to spot which questions the class found hardest and reteach five minutes of it.

Week 3 · Exam technique

Worksheet, self-marked

One of this site's worksheets or end-of-topic test questions, done on paper with full working. Pupils self-mark against the answer key in the next lesson; collect books every third cycle to spot-check.

Why keep the worksheet week — Core Maths is assessed entirely through written exams that demand full working and interpretation, not just a final number. Auto-marked tools are excellent for retrieval and fluency, but they can't substitute for the multi-step, exam-style writing practice a worksheet week gives pupils.
